Diabetes Online Community

Diabetes CommunityWHAT IS IT?

The diabetes online community (DOC) is an incredible place. A place that any of us can go to anytime to find the empathetic support we need. A place with an endless variety of support systems that meets us where we are and allows us to decide where we feel comfortable and where we fit in.

The DOC is still in its beginning stages since it’s really no more than 18 years old (give or take), it’s growing more and more every day, and it is estimated that between now and 2020, more than one billion new human beings will gain an internet connection they previously didn’t have. The reality is that many of them will be affected by diabetes in some way, shape, or form – same as you and me.

This living, breathing, ever-changing online support system is a place where all voices are welcomed, valued and appreciated, because everyone’s diabetes experience is just a little different, and some of the most valuable lessons about living well with diabetes are learned from our peers by sharing our stories.

The DOC really is a magical place where diabetes is the norm, and that in itself is a welcome change to the reality of day to day life in the “real world” where we often have to explain something about our diabetes management to someone who isn’t familiar with it (which is totally OK, but it’s so nice when everyone just gets it).

Whether we want to read a blog or an article on the topic of something we are struggling with right now written by our peers with diabetes, watch an interview between people living with diabetes just so we can relate to the topic of conversation, or we want to chat live any time of day or night with someone else who has diabetes and really just “gets it” no matter what we say, the #DOC has our backs.

Whenever I tell fellow people with diabetes about the #DOC (which is often), the first thing they ask me is where they can find it, which is a very good question. It can be found all over the internet, but there is no “official” page that lists all of the amazing sites to check out in order to find the specific things you are looking for.

I decided to start this page at www.diabetesoc.com and have begun to compile a list of a wide variety of blogs, article sites, forums, YouTube channels, and other resources for easier navigation of this vast and awesome community of amazingness that exists both online and in person.

Check out this video to learn just how massive a difference peer support has been proven to have in improving all areas of patient outcomes.

My team and I will continually add to this site, and welcome any suggestions for resources that will add value to those living with diabetes and those who love us.

If you have any suggestions, please fill out this short form and someone from our team will get back to you!

Let’s continue to build this DOC homepage – together!  -Gratefully, Daniele Hargenrader
